Sleep Cycles
Extensive research has been done to understand the phenomenon that occurs every night when we lay down to rest, and even though much of it is still a mystery, researchers have uncovered a 90-minute sleep cycle with 5 unique stages that repeat three to six times per night.
Stage 1: Your eyes begin to feel drowsy and heavy. Within 10 - 15 minutes, after laying down, you fall into a light sleep. This light sleep begins the sleeping phase NREM. NREM stands for non-rapid eye movement, it refers to the behavior of the eyes as the stage begins. During this process a person's muscles slowly relax, and their eyes, which move erratically, slow to a subtle stillness.
Stage 2: After falling asleep, your body prepares itself for a deeper sleep. During this preparation, the heart and respiration rate stabilizes. The body's temperature, brain activity, and blood pressure decreases. Muscles throughout the body, being to show mixed periods of relaxation and contraction, often resulting in short spasms, which are a common occurrence in most individuals during the sleep cycle.
Stage 3: Upon entering this phase of sleep, known as "Slow-wave" or "Delta sleep", you maybe unaware. "Slow-wave" or "Delta sleep" measures the delta frequency brain waves, or electrical activity being exerted within the brain. Within 5-15 minutes of being in this period of, deep sleep, your body begins a smooth transition into the next stage of the sleep cycle.
Stage 4: In this deep state of slumber, you are completely unaware of your surroundings and are oblivious to any sort of external sensations. This stage also lasts a short period of time, as you unconsciously fade into the final stage of the sleep cycle.
Stage 5: REM sleep is the most interesting phase of the entire sleep cycle. Your body is now paralyzed, causing all physiological responses to be inhibited. On the other hand, your brain is now in one of its most excited periods of activity. Heart rate and respiration speed up and become erratic, and in some cases, your appendages may twitch. Blood pressure increases and the eyes begin to move rapidly as a result of intense dreaming.
The first four stages are considered NREM sleep, while the last and final sleep phase,REM, completes the sleep cycle. REM sleep is the most beneficial phase in the entire cycle, it occurrs within 90 minutes of you falling asleep. The first period of REM usually lasts 10 minutes, but each cycle lengthens so that by the final cycle, REM, extends to an entire hour. Giving you the deepest sleep necessary for complete rejuvenation.
Sleep strongly influences the way we function in our day-to-day lives, and therefore, its vital to our existence to understand what makes us tick. When we're able to decipher the point at which our sleep is interrupted, it tends to be easier to identify a possible solution to the problem. Sleepatil is one of those solutions available to you, designed to make it easier to start and complete the sleep cycle. To give you the best sleep you've always dreamed of.
